Melatonin is mainly produced by the pineal gland but also in other parts of the body like the bone marrow, GI tract, and skin. It is made from serotonin, a neurotransmitter derived from tryptophan. Light exposure affects melatonin production, which is low during the day and increases at night. Melatonin helps regulate sleep-wake cycles, circadian rhythms, and also has effects on reproduction and antioxidant function.
